Microsoft Entra ID Protection account takeover prevention review

Microsoft Entra ID Protection connects identity risk with Microsoft’s access-control and investigation tools. It distinguishes risky sign-ins from risky users and supports risk-based Conditional Access. It is a natural evaluation path for an organization already managing identities in Entra.

Strengths

  • Native sign-in and user-risk reporting connects to Conditional Access remediation.
  • Documents detections such as anonymous IP usage, password spray and leaked credentials.
  • Supports administrative investigation and integration through Microsoft Graph and security tooling.

Limitations

  • Full risk policies and detailed reports require Entra ID P2 or qualifying suite coverage; Free and P1 provide only limited reporting.
  • Some detections use Microsoft Defender products and need the corresponding entitlement. Workforce P2 pricing is not External ID customer MAU pricing.

What the score means

The 8.9 out of 10 score is an editorial assessment under the same 40-criterion, seven-category framework. It weighs takeover detection, signal depth, real-time response, integration, evidence, customer friction and lifecycle fit.

Editor’s Choice is a separate recommendation. Read all criteria and relative weights and evaluate the entitled product on the product flow you protect.

How to evaluate it

Use an isolated tenant or test group. Confirm P2 coverage for the users in scope, relevant Defender signals, report availability, secure reset prerequisites and the effect of Conditional Access on each application.

Microsoft trial and tenant evaluation

Microsoft lists Try for free routes. Evaluate the actual P2 policies and protected user scope; an Entra Free tenant is not equivalent to full ID Protection.

FAQ

Does Entra ID Free include full risk policies?

No. Microsoft distinguishes limited risk reporting in Free and P1 from the full risk-policy and reporting capabilities of P2 or qualifying suite coverage. Check licenses for all protected users.

Is every impossible-travel signal included in standalone P2?

Do not assume that. Microsoft documents Defender-sourced detections and their additional licensing dependencies. Check the specific risk event, producing product and your tenant entitlement.
