Strengths
- Authentication and access controls sit in the system that issues the login decision.
- Auth0 documents attack protection and log events that can feed incident detection and investigations.
- Okta Adaptive MFA can use device, network, location and behavior context to apply stronger authentication selectively.
Limitations
- Auth0 Free includes Basic Attack Protection, not every enhanced or adaptive capability. The displayed 25,000-user free limit is not a promise of paid security features.
- Okta workforce suite prices, Auth0 monthly active users and a separate risk API use different units. Adaptive MFA and Identity Threat Protection have separate entitlements.
Who it fits
Teams selecting or strengthening the identity provider itself. Choose the workforce or customer-identity product first, then evaluate the exact adaptive controls, attack protection and session lifecycle required by your applications.
Use the alternatives by operating need to compare authentication, device/account risk, bot defense and identity exposure.
What the score means
The 9.1 out of 10 score is an editorial assessment under the same 40-criterion, seven-category framework. It weighs takeover detection, signal depth, real-time response, integration, evidence, customer friction and lifecycle fit.
Editor’s Choice is a separate recommendation. Read all criteria and relative weights and evaluate the entitled product on the product flow you protect.
How to evaluate it
Evaluate your actual tenant with login, logout, recovery and step-up journeys. Check factor enrollment, session termination, attack-protection logs and app-session behavior after identity-provider logout. Record workforce seats separately from application MAU.
Free application tenant or workforce trial
Auth0 offers Start building for free. Okta lists a workforce trial on its pricing page. Use a test tenant; a passkey playground demonstrates authentication rather than takeover detection on your traffic.

FAQ
Is Auth0 Free the same as Okta Adaptive MFA?
No. Auth0 application identity and Okta Workforce Identity are different products. Free Auth0 access, enhanced attack protection, Adaptive MFA and workforce suites have distinct limits and entitlements.
Does MFA remove the need for account-risk checks?
MFA strengthens authentication, but stolen authenticated sessions and risky post-login changes still need controls. Evaluate both the factor and the session lifecycle, including recovery and token invalidation.
